Welded together.

Decades ago it rolled across the field where the Unimog Museum now stands. Now the third MB-trac ever to roll off the production line is returning to its origins after an extensive restoration. As part of the "Start your torque" initiative by Mercedes-Benz Trucks, three trainees from Unimog service partner Schmahl Landtechnik have breathed new life into the legend.

Built in Gaggenau

The MB-trac 65/70 ushered in a new era in the 1970s. Produced in Gaggenau, Baden, it embodied the technological transition to the modern agricultural machine. Its robust design, all-wheel drive and universal applicability quickly made it an indispensable workhorse for fieldwork.

After years of great popularity, the vehicle concept was eventually superseded by newer models. Production was discontinued in the 1990s, and the MB-trac fell into oblivion – but not for everyone.

Good work brings people together.

Three trainees from Unimog service partner Schmahl Landtechnik set out to bring old iron back to life. Their mission: to fully restore the third MB-trac ever built. It was no easy task, because the vehicle was around half a century old. The engine had been completely removed, the hood was riddled with holes, several parts were defective, and rust had eaten deep into the bodywork. But Hinrich Höper, Sebastian Olli Eriksen and Lars Müller rose to the challenge.

“With the instructions and our tools, we did everything ourselves.”

To perfect every detail, the trainees had to show not only great precision and patience, but above all work closely together. This special project, part of the "Start your torque" job initiative, once again demonstrates the team spirit in this field and the unique experiences young people can gain at a Unimog service partner.

In total, it amounted to 371 days of hard work that the trainees put into the restoration of the MB-trac. And it culminates in a moving moment: the restored MB-trac returns to where it all began. To Gaggenau.

A pioneer for progress.

In the Unimog Museum the MB-trac 65/70 is now once again presented as a functioning exhibit that at the time impressed not only Gaggenau with its advanced technology. Equipped with a 4-cylinder diesel engine, the MB-trac produced 65 hp and was therefore particularly powerful for its size. Thanks to its all-wheel drive, it was always reliable even in difficult terrain. That made it a forerunner of modern machines.

History within reach.

The Unimog Museum has made it its mission not only to exhibit historic vehicles but also to keep their history alive. The return of the MB-trac 65/70 shows that the museum combines tradition and innovation in an exciting way. Through the restoration of vehicles like the MB-trac, the museum seeks to preserve the region's technical heritage.
