The all-electric Mercedes-Benz eEconic uniquely combines future technologies in the areas of environmental friendliness and safety. The municipal administration of the island of Bornholm, which defines itself by its love of nature, has also opted for the locally emission-free Special Truck. As a result, the environmentally friendly waste disposal vehicle is now in operation across the entire island.

The Danish Baltic Sea island of Bornholm enchants its visitors with picturesque towns, historic castles and the vast spaces that nature occupies here. Not only in the landscape, but also in the minds of the island's inhabitants.
With the commissioning of ten new all-electric Mercedes-Benz Trucks, which are being used as municipal waste collection vehicles, Bornholm underlines its environmental responsibility. But when it comes to commitment in this area, the island is by no means an "island": all of Denmark now boasts a proud fleet of well over 120 eEconic operating in more than 20 cities.
Thanks to this impressive spread of the eEconic, two ambitious visions for the future are taking ever more concrete shape: zero emissions and zero road fatalities in daily traffic.
Better safety in urban areas.
The eEconic combines environmental friendliness with safety. It is specifically optimized for the challenges of urban areas. Its DirectVision concept combines a low seating position with a deep-set panoramic windscreen, giving the driver a full view of their surroundings.
Much of what this view through the windscreen misses is captured by the eEconic through cameras and sensors on all sides of the vehicle. This helps ensure optimal all-round visibility. With its sophisticated safety assistance systems, the CO₂-saving Special Truck also contributes to the protection of all road users and, at the same time, to the occupational safety of drivers.
With this feature-rich safety package on board, the eEconic clearly meets the requirements of the new General Safety Regulation (GSR) of the European Union. Mercedes-Benz Trucks shares the EU's explicit commitment to Vision Zero, which envisages that fatal traffic accidents will be a thing of the past by 2050.

Less noise, better air.
"After thorough preparation with the drivers, we got off to a good start, and the electric trucks handle the routes just as they should. They are simply charged overnight at our new charging station and are ready for service again the next day," says Freddy Fogh Sørensen, Head of Department at Meldgaard Miljø.
The experienced recycling company with locations in several Danish municipalities handles waste disposal on Bornholm. Meldgaard Miljø has set itself the goal of developing sustainable solutions for the waste industry. For Bornholm, the eEconic has therefore come at just the right time.
After all, the Mercedes-Benz Special Truck is not only specifically designed for municipal waste disposal, but—because of its locally emission-free and almost silent operation—is also particularly welcome where nature is the focus. As is the case on the tourist magnet Bornholm. But not only there.

More and more municipalities electrified.
With the delivery of the eEconic to Bornholm, Mercedes-Benz Trucks is setting a milestone in environmentally friendly waste disposal. Since the model's first introduction in Esbjerg in 2022, the eEconic has successfully established itself in municipal operations.
"Municipalities see the eEconic as a valuable alternative that ideally replaces diesel and gas models," says Mikael Voigt, eMobility Manager at the importer Hessel Trucks. In recent years, almost all municipal tenders have required that the fleet consist entirely or partly of electric waste collection vehicles.
"And that is now clearly visible on the roads," emphasizes Mikael Voigt, "with more than 120 eEconic in operation in more than 20 cities." And with many more already on their way.

A strong service network.
The ten new vehicles are among the first two-axle eEconic to operate on Danish roads. Because the all-electric Special Trucks can charge their batteries at night, this not only ensures smooth operation but also means the new waste collection service protects both the environment and residents' peace and quiet through its quiet and clean operation.
The electrification of the fleet on Bornholm has also been accompanied by the opening of an authorised Mercedes-Benz service workshop on the island. The Nyboes Auto workshop in Rønne has been serving and supplying the island for around 40 years, including with Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles. It is now also prepared for the special requirements of the electric models.
This enables Nyboes Auto to provide quick and uncomplicated maintenance of the locally zero-emission trucks directly on the island. In total, there are 28 Mercedes-Benz truck service locations in Denmark – a dense network that combines fast help with professional support.
