Whether it’s a side salad on Heligoland, an arugula pizza in Frankfurt or a cauliflower casserole in Friedrichshafen, the likelihood that any of us in the country has already eaten vegetables from Mählmann Gemüsebau is high. In 1983, after passing his master farmer’s examination, Wolfgang Mählmann took over his parents’ farm. After three years of livestock farming with 30 pigs, ten cows and 50 chickens, Wolfgang Mählmann stopped keeping livestock in 1984. Since then, only vegetables have been grown on the Mählmann farm in the Oldenburger Münsterland.

Green thumb, green Unimog.
The family-run business now grows over 30 vegetable crops, from cauliflower and iceberg lettuce to broccoli and radishes. Mählmann Gemüsebau supplies its customers across Europe, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; the harvest is carried out just in time.
It is no surprise that the company colour chosen was grass green. More precisely: RAL 6010. The three brand-new Unimog U 427 models that the Unimog general distributor recently handed over to the company are also painted in this colour. The Unimog has been in use at Mählmann since 2004 – much to the delight of workshop and fleet manager Marius Vaske. Since 2008 he has been looking after the welfare of the Unimog on the farm: "The three new identical models are numbers 10, 11 and 12 at the company."

On the way in the field and on the road.
The equipment of the agricultural implement carriers is functional and leaves nothing to be desired. On-board, drivers will find everything they need for working in the fields and driving on the roads: high-traction tyres, agricultural platform body, coupling jaw, hydraulic system for trailers and a neatly equipped cab with air conditioning and "particularly comfortable seat", as Marius Vaske emphasises. And that's an important factor as the Unimog vehicles are used in transport logistics. Sometimes they can travel up to 50 kilometres from the company premises to the field and back.

The daily distances the vehicles have to cover are the crucial point, which is why the agricultural business decided on the Unimog long ago: "For the journeys from the field to the farmyard or to the Langförden wholesale market near Vechta there is no more suitable vehicle than the Unimog," says Vaske. According to him, the Unimog is particularly convincing in terms of speed, reliability, fuel consumption and tyre wear. "No other vehicle can serve us more efficiently."

Investment for the future.
The material is not spared in any way: the Unimog pull up to 18 tonnes. Curtain-sided trucks or refrigerated box bodies are moved through the Oldenburg Münsterland from April to November. That means around 2,000 operating hours per Unimog. They remain in service for ten to twelve years before being replaced by new models.
