To mark the anniversary of the company, the Healthcare division at Simon Hegele designed a special Actros.

The logistics service provider Simon Hegele is a market leader in healthcare. To mark its 100th anniversary, the company designed a very special Actros – with a top-of-the-range engine, comprehensive range of features and creative wrapping.

The number 2040 on the number plate gives it away: this Actros is brand new. The first two digits on each number plate indicate the year of registration at Simon Hegele. In this case, it is autumn 2020. Huge, clearly visible white contours leap out from the black box body of the triple-axle – the image on the side of the Actros makes quite an impression. “It’s a CT scan,” Mike Winter explains. The 45‑year‑old is one of the managing directors of the Simon Hegele Group and is responsible for the healthcare sector. “The picture was taken in a truck X‑ray system at customs and was then printed onto a wrapping and added to the body. In this way, we establish a connection between the goods we transport and the images produced by the goods we transport.”

The Actros with the striking print is the show truck of the Simon Hegele Group to mark 100 years of the company. The anniversary called for something special. Something that would spark curiosity for the healthcare services provided by the company. Simon Hegele is one of the leading names in healthcare logistics. “Although we had to cancel the big anniversary celebrations due to the pandemic, the anniversary truck should still be ready on time,” says Winter.

The main location of the Healthcare division is the logistics centre “Rittigfeld 1”, one of three sites in Forchheim in Upper Franconia. This is the hub for packaging and shipping of healthcare products worldwide. It is quite close to Nuremberg Airport, while Autobahn 73 is very near. “We have the perfect infrastructure here for multimodal transport,” says Winter. Medical equipment such as CT scanners, MRI scanners and other special equipment leave the warehouse every day.

On behalf of large medical technology manufacturers such as Siemens Healthineers, Simon Hegele really does take care of everything. “We offer a 360‑degree portfolio,” explains Winter, who has been head of the Healthcare division since 2014. From storage, transportation and air freight safety to setup and training on site. Dismantling, recycling and reconditioning of old systems are also part of the range of tasks, as well as 24/7 supply of parts.

“Here, we have the ideal infrastructure for multi-modal transport.”

Ideally located: the logistics centre in Forchheim is right beside Autobahn 73.

Torsten Zabel, transport and fleet manager at the group, joined the company in 1991. As a driver. “My first truck was a Mercedes‑Benz. Ever since, I’ve had nothing but positive experiences with the brand.” This is why he exclusively turns to Mercedes‑Benz for new purchases. The latest order is for 15 Actros trucks with a lifting platform.

There is also another reason why Zabel counts on Mercedes-Benz: “When it comes to safety and technical innovation, Mercedes‑Benz is well ahead of the rest. This is a good match for us, as we are also always developing technically.”

For example, Simon Hegele has developed a cooling swap body that keeps sensitive equipment cool during transportation. A swap body that can be lowered hydraulically to the ground has also been developed in house. Without this, it would not be possible to get approval for the supply and installation of systems in the British Isles, for example.

Andreas Reveltzis has not been at Simon Hegele for quite as long as Mike Winter and Torsten Zabel. The 55‑year‑old has been a driver and installer at the company since 2019 – since recently in the special anniversary truck. Reveltzis is one of 350 employees in the installation teams at Simon Hegele. “After the major OEM manufacturers, we have the largest number of trained specialists in assembly and installation,” says Mike Winter. In total, 1,300 people worldwide work in the Healthcare division.

Attention to detail: Even the headrests pay tribute to the company’s anniversary.

From the very first glance, it is clear that Reveltzis’ Actros 2563 is no ordinary truck, with a stainless-steel front bumper and roof lamp bracket, chrome details, alloy wheels and quilted leather seats. Important: safety is also not overlooked. Active Brake Assist 5 is integrated along with Sideguard Assist. “I don’t ever want to have to tell anyone that a family member won’t be coming home due to a safety system that wasn’t in place,” says Torsten Zabel. The 15 Actros that have just been ordered will also have the complete Safety Package on board when they are delivered in April 2021 – then with a 21 on the number plate.
