The system integrates a driving style optimised for the route topography into the operating mode of the automatic transmission and, in conjunction with the precisely coordinated shift strategy, allows fuel savings of up to 5% to be achieved. Using satellite-based positioning technology and maps, Predictive Powertrain Control1 (PPC) identifies the course of the road and any downhill and uphill stretches ahead. The data provides the basis for the optimisation of the shift points, gear steps and the set cruise control speed. The kinetic energy of the vehicle is used as far as possible to avoid unnecessary acceleration, shifting or braking. PPC knows some 350,000 kilometres (95 %) of European trunk roads and can be used at speeds between 25 and 90 km/h.
