Legendary road with obstacles.

Hey RoadStars! Our adventure begins this week with a 5 km hike to the crater edge of a volcano. We walk up a steep path under the burning sun and finally reach the breathtaking viewpoint on the Chaitén volcano. The effort was worth it.

From here, we start our journey along the legendary Carretera Austral, also known as the Ruta 7. It winds deep through the difficult terrain in the south of Chile and is an impressive 3,500 km long. We relax for a few days on a detour to the nature paradise of Isla los Leones. A local fisherman gives us fish, which together with our freshly baked bread makes a delicious dinner. In the morning, we watch dolphins and sea lions at the mouth of the river, during the day we hike through the dense jungle or ride to the beach on our bikes.

The next stage on the Carretera Austral is a challenge, as the serpentine tracks of the Cuesta Queulat are in quite poor condition. Because it still rains heavily here in the south of Chile due to the autumn weather, our windscreen wiper quickly stops working. Mike has no choice but to do a quick repair in the rain so that he can see while driving. I can observe the joy on his face from the warm interior.

Next, we head to Coyhaique to visit our old friend Mario. He owns a transport company and therefore has a large workshop where Mike and mechanic José carry out a thorough check of the Axor.

Together they change the diesel filters, clean the air filters and replace the defective windscreen wiper. He also gets a few useful tips for along the way.

Andrea and Mike Kammermann have been on the road in the Expedition Axor since June 2020. The Swiss couple have visited much of Europe, from the northernmost point of Norway to the Canary Islands, and also made a detour to Tunisia. Distance covered on the road on the journey: 83,000 kilometres! Travelling to other destinations was not possible, mainly due to pandemic-related restrictions. Until now! They travelled through more than 20 countries in 2018 and 2019, covering a good 47,000 kilometres.
