Detour to Uruguay
Mike and Andrea head to Uruguay on their way through South America – and experience familiar places with new eyes.
After more than two years in Argentina and Chile, it is an unusual feeling to suddenly arrive in Uruguay. Maybe it’s because we’ve got so used to those two countries – or because it’s the first border we cross as a three. Getting in is easy.
Shortly afterwards, we are parked up in a green meadow by the Uruguay River. We stay there for a few days before moving on to a beach where we’d previously camped in 2023, after we’d shipped our vehicle to South America. The three of us stroll along the beach and enjoy the feeling of being back in a familiar place.
Travelling as a three
Now we’re travelling as a three, things have changed: we stay in one place for longer, but travel further on other days. In Uruguay, we immediately notice the unusual speed limits, which quickly and frequently change, e.g. 25, 45 or 75 km. The many speed cameras also remind us of Europe. We mainly drive along the coast, visit the historic Piriápolis and, of course, also stop off in Montevideo.
As we drive over the bridge at the harbour, we see the place where we picked up our Axor over two years ago. It’s crazy how long we’ve been on the road, how much we’ve experienced and yet how little we’ve seen of this huge continent.

A sunrise goodbye
We continue to Punta del Este, where we visit Uruguay’s southernmost tip. Then we head north – hugely excited about the next country. But before we leave Uruguay, we are bid farewell by a fantastic sunrise in a small village on a river delta. Now our journey takes us on to South America’s largest country.
Do you know which country this is?
