Series: 4-Xtremes – The World Tour
Through the land of extremes with the Axor
From icy winds across barren mountains to tropical wetlands: In Argentina, Mike and Andrea experience a country like no other.
Hey RoadStars! In South America there are 13 countries, and yet we spent most of our time in Argentina.
The reason is simple: the country is almost eight times the size of Germany and extremely diverse. From the harsh, cool climate in the south to periods of extreme heat in the north, there is an incredible amount to see here.
In wild Patagonia
We spent a lot of time in the south, in the wild and vast Patagonia. For us as overlanders the region is perfect: we can camp freely and enjoy nature. Inland there are gigantic petrified trees, on the coast we encounter Magellanic penguins and sea lions, and at the foot of the Andes hundreds of guanacos roam freely in large herds.
Besides beautiful landscapes there are also gorges with cave paintings or petrified dinosaur bones to discover. The largest dinosaur in the world was even found here!

Patagonia's rugged side
Heading north along the mountains we visit the well-known Perito Moreno Glacier and the mountain region around Fitz Roy. It's always cool here, and with the constant strong wind you can rarely sit outside in the sun. That's why we always plan our longer hikes around the wind.
Sometimes we have to give in to the weather too: once it snowed so heavily overnight that the next day we had to turn back. It's an experience all the same!

Reaching great heights in the north
In the north of the country we travel across one of the largest salt flats in the world, and a regular mountain pass can even take us over 5,000 metres above sea level through the Andes.
The land here is rather dry. There are sand dunes, colourful canyons and cacti that are taller than our Axor!

From dust to lush greenery
As our route leads us east, it feels once again like a completely new country. The landscape turns lush green, and it’s humid, which we have to get used to again.
After winding roads through dense forest, the land evens out again, and we arrive at a wetland where caimans, capybaras, marsh deer and hundreds of birds are frolicking.
