    Extreme off-road Unimog

    Built for extremes.

If your everyday life involves extreme terrain, extreme weather conditions, or extreme tasks, you have a powerhouse at your side with the extreme off-road Unimog, which is not only reliable but also extremely robust.

    Highlights

    Setting standards with the Unimog.

Where the road ends, the path for the extreme off-road Unimog begins: All-wheel drive, high fording capability, and the extremely twistable chassis make it possible. This is how you bring teams, materials, or heavy equipment to remote deployment sites.

A blue Unimog with a crane arm lifts a large cylindrical load in a forest area.

With the Unimog, you get more than just a vehicle. Standardised implement and attachment options mean that the range of applications is virtually limitless.

A Unimog demonstrates its off-road capability by driving up a steep, paved hill in a forest area.

30° axle articulation enables optimal traction, even on difficult terrain.

A red-yellow Unimog fire truck drives through muddy water in a forest area.

The Unimog's fording capability allows you to cross rivers, streams, or flooded areas up to a depth of 1.2 m.

    Drives

    On the road with momentum.

Whether you're on the motorways at up to 89 km/h or moving at walking pace: With the Unimog, you cut efficiently at any speed range. Because your truck has a drivetrain with efficient engines from Mercedes‑Benz Trucks as well as a powerful transmission, allowing it to handle high payloads with its robust axles.

A diagram shows the different gears (crawler, work, and basic gears) of a Unimog and their speed ranges in forward and reverse driving.

    Attachment options

    Versatile off-road.

Mechanical, hydraulic and electric drives as well as interfaces open up numerous opportunities for different implements and bodies. Mercedes‑Benz Trucks has been cooperating with international equipment manufacturers and bodybuilders for decades. The standardised attachment points make it easy to attach bodies and change implements.

    Sets the standards off-road.

Whether your mission takes you across gravel, snow, sand or unpaved roads: The extreme off-road Unimog gets through it when others give up. And it brings has the necessary tools on board so you can accomplish your tasks on-site.

    Versatile attachment options

With numerous standardised attachment points, you can securely and stably attach accessories and attachments.

    1.  Standardised front mounting plate for attachments up to 1.5 t
    2. Mounting brackets for compressors or major assemblies
    3. Winch holder
    4. Frame mounting brackets
    5. Mounting parts for platforms or box bodies
    6. Subframe for special bodies
A labelled illustration of attachment points illustrates the variety of attachment options available.

Red fire truck standing in a forest, while emergency workers spray water with a hose.

If, for example, you want to use water pumps or hydraulic pumps, the engine-powered PTO offers versatile deployment potential. Optionally, you can also opt for the proven transmission PTOs, for example, a fast one for hydraulic pumps and a very fast one for fire service pumps. The special subframe is used for the torsion-free mounting of platforms or box bodies.

Close-up of the front of a white Unimog showing various connections.

With the vehicle's hydraulics, you can operate equipment such as self-recovery winches, snow ploughs, front loaders, or hydraulic tools. The single-circuit hydraulic system delivers a working pressure of 240 bar with a flow rate of 60 l/min and a pump capacity of 24 kW. Standardised plug connections are also available at the front and rear. For electrical power supply to the equipment, you can rely on 4 standardised sockets.

Whether in disaster relief or other extreme situations: You can also rely on the Unimog for demanding tasks and challenges.

    Group dynamics.

If you want to transport not only materials but also many people, you can order the Unimog with a double cab. The front seat bench has space for 3 people, the rear bench offers 4 seats, allowing you to transport a total of 7 people. The rear bench comes with individual seat belts, is foldable, and provides plenty of storage space underneath for tools, equipment, or personal items. The crew can easily get in and out through 4 wide-opening doors. And if you need extra comfort, you can opt for 2 air-sprung individual seats instead of the rear bench.

    Off-road capability

    Barely any obstacles.

The extreme off-road Unimog combines high ground clearance with a low centre of gravity. This provides you with maximum stability even on steep terrain and enables highly flexible movement across challenging terrain.

    Unique frame design.

Thanks to the offset vehicle frame, the heart of the Unimog’s off-road capability, you remain flexible and stable in any application. The cranked design, together with the portal axles, enables high ground clearance with a low vehicle centre of gravity. And because the frame is fully welded, it can permanently withstand torsional stress. Its torsional flexibility, combined with torque tube technology and the three-point mounting of the engine, transmission, cab, and bodies, allows a diagonal articulation of up to 600 mm.

The axle connection via torque tube, thrust ball on the transmission, and coil springs with vast spring travel allows for axle articulation up to 30°, ensuring easy handling and high levels of grip. The encapsulation protects the Unimog’s drive shafts from contamination such as dust, water, and other environmental factors encountered off-road.

Cross-section of a wheel hub with tyre showing internal, mechanical components.

The typical portal axles of the Unimog offer you great ground clearance with a low vehicle centre of gravity. And with the asymmetrical arrangement of the axle differentials, you can more easily drive over obstacles. The axle suspension is reinforced and can withstand very heavy loads. The axle layout is also designed to be robust: This makes high standard load ratings possible.

Thanks to its short frame overhangs and high ground clearance, the Unimog provides large approach and slope angles. Together with its climbing ability of up to 100%, you can also tackle steep sections of terrain.

    Schematic drawing for single tires.

The principle is: The rear wheels follow the front wheels in the same track. This increases traction and protects the ground surface.

    Optimal traction with TireControl plus.

Whether you're on the road, in sand or off-road, you can adjust the tyre pressure to suit the surface. With three pre-configured modes —“Road,” “Sand,” and “Rough Terrain” — you intuitively select the correct setting. Even nature benefits from TireControl plus: Driving off-road with lowered tyre pressure improves traction while also protecting the ground surface.

    Comfort and design

    Ergonomics

Get in, feel comfortable, and start driving: With the comfortable seat position and the clearly arranged combined instrument cluster, the Unimog offers you intuitive operation and increased safety in operation.

    Unimog Part of a Legend

    Birth of a legend

Many legends are born out of hard times; the Unimog is no different. Built in the aftermath of World War II, the Unimog was the brilliant idea of a former head of aeroengine design and was constructed to take on the toughest tasks from the very beginning. Created to go anywhere and complete any job easily, the first Unimog rolled off the production line in 1948.  Earning its badge in 1953, the Mercedes star would sit proudly on the front of the Unimog S from 1955 to 1980 as it supported the armed forces and took explorers on new adventures.

    Unimog Part of a Legend

    Birth of a legend

As more people discovered what this workhorse could do, new models were developed to suit different challenges. The bigger, better 406 series came in 1963, with the 425 series taking on the heavy-duty work from 1965. Between 1985 and 1996 the Unimog got its reputation as a master of all tasks, with the 408 and 419 series built to support local authorities back home. Today, new technologies such as a Euro VI engine, torque tube driveline and VarioPilot mean the latest Unimog models can take on anything modern businesses can throw at it. Whatever the task or terrain, a ‘can-do attitude’ still lies at the very heart of every Unimog. A true icon. A true legend.
