Information on the disposal of batteries
EU Battery Regulation
Information on the environmentally friendly use and disposal of batteries in accordance with Article 74 of the EU Battery Regulation.
As a manufacturer and distributor of battery-powered products, we are responsible for the sustainable handling of batteries and accumulators. These instructions will help you to use, return and dispose of batteries in an environmentally responsible way.
a) Your contribution to waste prevention – using batteries sustainably
As an end user, you can make a significant contribution to avoiding waste. Conscious use of batteries helps to conserve resources and reduce environmental impact. We recommend the following best practices:
- If possible, use rechargeable batteries (accumulators) instead of disposable ones.
- Charge batteries regularly and avoid deep discharging.
- Only use fast charging functions when absolutely necessary.
- Store batteries in a cool and dry place.
- Switch off devices when not in use.
b) Returning used batteries correctly – your role in separate collection
Used batteries must not be disposed of with household waste. You are legally obliged to collect used batteries separately and return them to suitable collection points. This enables proper recycling and protects the environment.
Our battery strategy
Conservation of resources through circular economy
To protect valuable raw materials, reduce our CO₂ footprint, and minimize environmental impact, Daimler Truck AG pursues a holistic battery life cycle strategy.
In doing so, we rely on three central principles:
Repurposing: Used batteries are reconditioned and, after their first life cycle in the vehicle, returned to a second life cycle in vehicles.
Re-use: The batteries are then made available to second-life providers (e.g. battery storage systems).
Recycle: At the end of their life cycle, the batteries are recycled using certified processes. In this way, we secure raw materials, reduce CO₂ emissions and make an active contribution to sustainable mobility.
c) Collection and return points, reuse, and treatment of used batteries
Old batteries are taken back by our authorised Mercedes-Benz Trucks service workshops. An overview of the participating workshops and their services can be found at:
The following systems and collection points are available for returning used batteries:
- Dealers of starter batteries, industrial batteries and electric vehicle batteries;
- Economic operators who reprocess or repurpose starter batteries, industrial batteries, and electric vehicle batteries;
- Waste electrical and electronic equipment and end-of-life vehicle treatment plants referred to in Article 65 for used starter batteries, used industrial batteries, and used electric vehicle batteries generated in the course of their business activities;
- Authorities or third parties acting on their behalf carrying out waste management activities.
d) Safety instructions for handling batteries
- Observe all warnings on the battery and in the operating instructions.
- Only use suitable battery types.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Do not swallow, throw into water, put into fire or expose to excessive heat.
- Avoid deep discharging and short circuits.
- Do not recharge non-rechargeable batteries.
- Never open or dismantle batteries.
Caution regarding batteries containing lithium:
improper handling may result in a risk of fire or explosion.

e) Meaning of markings and symbols on batteries
Markings on batteries
Crossed-out rubbish bin
Batteries must not be disposed of with household waste and must be collected separately.
Chemical symbols (e.g. Pb, Cd, Hg)
These indicate that the battery contains lead, cadmium, or mercury – substances classified as hazardous.
CE labelling
Indicates conformity with applicable EU regulations.
Warning of explosive substances
An explosive atmosphere may form inside the battery.
Warning of flammable substances
Flammable; liquids form explosive mixtures with air or are self-igniting.
Warning of battery hazards
Formation of oxyhydrogen gas when battery is flooded.
Warning of corrosive substances
Leaking electrolyte can destroy metals and corrode body tissues; serious eye damage is possible.
Warning of toxic and harmful substances
Warning of electrical voltage > 60 V
High-voltage warning (HV symbol)
No fire, naked flames and smoking
Wear protective goggles during service work
Leaking electrolyte can cause severe chemical burns and blindness. Wear suitable protective clothing to protect the skin and eyes.
Markings for transport (according to ADR) on packaging
UN 3480 – Lithium-ion batteries > 100 Wh
UN 3090 - Lithium metal batteries > 100 Wh
UN 2794 - Batteries (accumulators), wet, filled with acid, electrical collectors
UN 2800 - Batteries (accumulators), wet, leak-proof, electrical collectors
