"The Unimog is unbeatable"
"The three-pointed star is a part of my DNA," says Udo Leib. The 57-year-old farmer and vintner from Hahnheim, south of Mainz, can't stop gushing when asked about his latest acquisition, a Unimog U 529: "When you're using front-mounted implements the Unimog is unbeatable, the cab with its large panoramic windscreen is ideal for good all-round visibility and I now use one third less fuel with this vehicle than with a conventional farm tractor. You simply have to love the Unimog." What might sound like Udo Leib reciting an advertisement for Mercedes-Benz Trucks is actually his deep conviction. "The new Unimog is now my fourth. It all started with a 406, followed by a U 1400 and finally a U 300."

Fertilising, sowing, ploughing, cultivating.
He cultivates 150 hectares of arable land with his black-painted Unimog. Fertilizing, sowing, ploughing, harrowing – the fully equipped U 529 is worked hard every day. "The power (286 hp) the Unimog has is simply fantastic," says farmer Leib. The man from Rheinhessen is a jack-of-all-trades and a real live wire; he has a long career in carnival behind him, sells his wines to great entertainment effect at the Mainz and Wiesbaden weekly markets, and has recently taken up driving a four-horse team.
In other words a four-in-hand, with which, as an experienced coachman, he trots his home-bred Friesians through the region. During the carriage rides locals and tourists can sample his wines – great fun with entertainer Udo Leib.
All black.
"Everything on my farm is black: the Unimog, my new Mercedes-Benz G-Klasse and, of course, my horses." His Unimog is equipped with two double quick-change flatbeds and can be used for almost any task in the field and on the road. The powerful front and rear power lifts as well as the front and rear power take-offs can operate all required implements. The rear power take-off, with an output of 210 kW, leaves nothing to be desired. He also had the tire pressure control system TireControl (increasing traction by up to 100 percent), a spiral fan, auxiliary cooling, a hydrostatic drive for stepless driving and an automated transmission factory-installed in his favorite workplace.

And because efficiency is so important on his farm, Udo Leib even picked up the welding torch himself when it came to fertilizing: his fertilizer bunker, which the Unimog carries piggyback, holds no less than three tonnes of granular fertilizer. "Two refills and I'm done!" They don't mess about at the Sonnenhof — this is a place where people get things done. The next generation, in the form of his son Johannes, is already waiting in the wings. Father Udo gives him completely free rein. Only when it comes to driving the Unimog does the fun stop for him: "I drive the Unimog — and nobody else!"
