Forest fire operations in the Mediterranean, flood alerts on the Danube and the Elbe, severe hurricanes and autumn storms across Europe, together with hail or earthquakes: the number of natural disasters is increasing worldwide – and with them the large-scale and specialised deployments of fire services and disaster control organisations. Emergency personnel face ever greater challenges – and so do the emergency vehicles.

No other vehicle offers comparable performance potential under the harshest conditions like the Unimog: as a transport vehicle for crew, material, tools and equipment. Different auxiliary drives also allow the installation and operation of firefighting centrifugal pumps, winches, generators, hydraulic tippers or loader cranes. This makes the Unimog the optimal vehicle for firefighting operations.

Cranked and welded vehicle frame, torque tube technology for extreme diagonal articulation of up to 600 mm, large approach and departure angles, portal axles, all-wheel drive and differential locks, as well as high traction and gradeability. With these characteristics the Unimog stands up to the tough demands of firefighting operations.

Another special feature is the self-protection system. It wets the tyres and windscreen when flames come too close to the vehicle. In addition, the heat-protection package available from the factory includes, for example, protective sleeving for critical lines to shield them from heat and damage.

With its round roof hatch for firefighting directly from the cab, the Unimog effectively supports emergency crews. The optional crew cab provides space for up to seven firefighters.

The engine or transmission PTO makes the Unimog the perfect vehicle for rapid wildfire-fighting. The transmission with off-road gear group ensures the vehicle can be operated even in difficult terrain or for "pump & roll" at extremely low driving speeds. With this driveline technology it can wade through water up to 80 cm deep (optionally 120 cm). Other highlights include the TireControl plus tyre pressure control system with "road", "sand" and "rough terrain" modes, and the powerful transmission featuring Electronic Quick Reverse, an off-road reduction gear and the electronically automated EAS shifting.
