How many Unimogs are currently in use? Twelve? Thirteen? Yes, there are thirteen. Ralph Sauter has to think for a moment. The oldest Unimog has now been replaced after around 15,000 operating hours — with a brand new Unimog U 435 implement carrier with VarioPilot®.

At home in the green care business.

The VarioPilot® transferable steering is very important to Sauter's business. Every Unimog is equipped with it. The company, besa strassenunterhalt AG from the Swiss town of Balterswil in the canton of Thurgau, specialises in greenery and woody vegetation maintenance on roads and railroad embankments. His father laid the foundations of the company in 1980. At the time, Beat Sauter was out in the region with his tractor, keeping the growth along the roads in check. Gradually, the order volume and thus the operation grew. The tractor quickly reached its limits. "That's why there was no alternative for us but the Unimog," says son Ralph Sauter (35), who now runs the business together with his brother Sandro, who is one year younger.

The Sauters have 23 employees. And all of them are huge Unimog fans. "Our father had already built the first crane himself back then. We don't use any off-the-shelf cranes. We build all our cranes ourselves and also fit all the bodies in our workshop ourselves." They are talking about a hydraulic universal arm that is mounted in front of the engine hood or at the rear and can operate a variety of machines.

    Universal and individual.

Whether mulcher or shear for cutting woody growth along the railway tracks: the Sauter brothers are proud of their father's skill and his technical masterpieces, which they still build as he once did. The hydraulically extendable counterweight on the left side is also a Sauter invention. Five of the Unimogs are equipped with a 2-way system. "In just a few minutes we're on the track and can start vegetation maintenance," explains Ralph Sauter.

“In a few minutes we'll be on the track and can begin vegetation maintenance.”

Ralph Sauter, Managing Director, besa AG

Unimog as a valuable unique selling point.

But that's not all: only a few companies in Switzerland are able to clean tunnel tubes. besa AG is one of them. As a rule, Swiss tunnels are washed every year. However, only up to four metres high. Above that there are no safety-related markings or lighting installed. It takes four hours to clean one kilometre of tunnel on both sides of the carriageway.

And what if all tunnels have been cleaned and all woody vegetation cut back? Of course: then it's time for winter service!

    Tailor-made eMobility

The conversion professionals at Mercedes-Benz Custom Tailored Trucks have once again received a special assignment: an eEconic is needed for the Australian market that does not yet exist. The expansion of e-mobility presents the colleagues in Molsheim with growing challenges – but impossible? Neither this order nor the next ones are impossible, they say.

    On Stockholm's quiet trails

The Swedish traffic safety company TMA Bolaget AB is contributing to Stockholm’s environmental and climate goals with two new eEconic vehicles.

    Clean safely

Econic vacuum trucks ensure empty and clean gullies so that rainwater can drain safely from the roads.

    New brooms sweep clean

Jens Riedel and Silvio Schubert from the Torgau public utilities keep the streets clean with the help of three Unimog.

Maintenance operation at the hydropower plant

The Ennskraftwerke in Austria rely on the Unimog U 323. At the Thurnsdorf power plant the dam wall is only two and a half metres wide. A conventional crane doesn't get you very far there. Therefore the decision for a new model from Wörth was easy: the Unimog handles the local conditions well.

    Comfort in the extreme

Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks puts the Unimog implement carrier through its paces on the Grossglockner at an altitude of 2,500 m. The focus is on the UNI-TOUCH® control system.

Goes the extra mile with ease.

With the new Unimog U 527, now only one basic vehicle needs to be maintained, fuelled and stored, but it does the work of three.

    Generations meeting in the Harz.

    A Unimog U 84, a U 2400, a U 400 and a brand-new U 429 clear the way to the summit.

    All good things ...

Team Orange Dresden relies on the Unimog U 527 – equipped with a V-plow, watering arm, crane and loading platform, the vehicle is versatile in use throughout the year.
