    Generations' meeting in the Harz.

    Municipal services and Waste disposal

    Generations' meeting in the Harz.

The Brocken in the Harz National Park enjoys a mystical reputation. At this historically significant location, a new Unimog U 429 has now literally followed in the tracks of its predecessors – an idea from Henne Nutzfahrzeuge and Nutzfahrzeuge Hasselfelde. In what can only be described as perfect winter weather, four Unimog generations worked together to clear the way to the summit.

Four Unimog from four decades clear the Brocken Road together

On a misty, snowy February day an icy wind is blowing over the Brockenstraße in the Harz. Visibility is barely more than 30 metres when suddenly some rays of sun pierce through the sky to turn the craggy summit of the Brocken into a glistening winter landscape. In this magical moment four Unimog trucks equipped for winter service make their way up the mountain pass: a Unimog U 84 (from 1979), a Unimog U 2400 (1995), a Unimog U 400 (2004) and a brand-new Unimog U 429 (2018).

“A breath-taking sight and the knowledge that almost 40 years separate the oldest and the newest Unimog – simply great!”

    Rüdiger Lorenz, Henne Nutzfahrzeuge GmbH

    Winter service on the Brockenstraße.

At an altitude of 1,141 metres, the Brocken in the Harz National Park is the highest mountain in northern Germany. The only access to the summit plateau is the 9.6-kilometre-long Brockenstraße, which climbs approximately 525 metres. In the winter season the entire road must be cleared to allow the rescue service, the fire service, the staff of the weather station, the operations team of the Harzer Schmalspurbahn, as well as employees and supply vehicles of the Brockenwirt to gain access.

Unimog service partner rises to the challenge.

Because de-icing agents are not permitted in the national park for environmental protection reasons, the snow can only be cleared with a snowplough and a snow blower. Since 2017 the winter service has been handled by the Unimog service partner Nutzfahrzeuge Hasselfelde. From October to April managing director Christian Degenhardt sends his team out almost daily with heavy equipment onto the Brockenstraße.

    A Unimog U 84 (1979), a U 2400 (1995), a U 400 (2004) and a brand-new Unimog U 429 (2018). Magical moment: Four Unimog equipped for winter ascend the mountain road to the Brocken plateau.

Unimog U 429 with modern equipment.

To be able to realise the special project with four Unimog generations on the Brocken, the existing fleet in Hasselfelde was expanded by the Unimog general representative Henne with a brand-new Unimog U 429 equipped with complete municipal equipment and Schmidt winter service equipment.

The Unimog implement carrier is fitted with a hydrostatic traction drive, which allows a stepless transition between working speed in creep mode and normal driving speed. The hydraulics of the new Unimog provide a snowplough relief that both increases clearing performance and extends the service life of the attachment. Electronic Quick Reverse ensures quick switching between forward and reverse gears – ideal for use in deep snowdrifts.

A Unimog from 1979 is still in service.

Normally, winter service on the road to the Brocken plateau is carried out mainly by a Unimog U 400 from 2004 fitted with a cutter/blower and a dry bulk spreader. Thanks to its front power take-off, hydrostatic drive, working unit and the VarioPilot® transferable steering, working with the Unimog is absolutely comfortable. It is supported by a more than 20-year-old Unimog U 2400. The most powerful member of model series 437 is also equipped with a snow cutter/blower and additionally with a Palfinger crane in a rare detachable configuration. Despite the crane, this Unimog also has the full municipal equipment.

When the "Unimog youngsters" can no longer manage on their own, a U 84 from 1979 comes to the rescue. While the Unimog model series 406 pushes its way rather leisurely up the Brocken with its 62 kW (84 hp), the mounted drive engine OM 355 A supplies the Schmidt front-mounted snow blower with a hefty 191 kW (260 hp). What is special about this vehicle: the Unimog was acquired for winter service in Quickborn near Hamburg after the 1978/1979 snow disaster. However, another winter of snow chaos did not occur in the North German region. And so the Unimog U 84 was taken out of service after more than 35 years with a mileage of just 5,900 km and only 141 operating hours. On the Brocken he is now allowed to really tackle the snow again and is experiencing his second spring — or rather winter.

    Unimog U 84 with a 260-hp snow blower Still fully operational after 40 years: a Unimog U 84 with a 260-hp snow blower.

    Tailor-made eMobility

The conversion professionals at Mercedes-Benz Custom Tailored Trucks have once again received a special assignment: an eEconic is needed for the Australian market that does not yet exist. The expansion of e-mobility presents the colleagues in Molsheim with growing challenges – but impossible? Neither this order nor the next ones are impossible, they say.

    On Stockholm's quiet trails

The Swedish traffic safety company TMA Bolaget AB is contributing to Stockholm’s environmental and climate goals with two new eEconic vehicles.

    Clean safely

Econic vacuum trucks ensure empty and clean gullies so that rainwater can drain safely from the roads.

    New brooms sweep clean

Jens Riedel and Silvio Schubert from the Torgau public utilities keep the streets clean with the help of three Unimog.

Maintenance operation at the hydropower plant

The Ennskraftwerke in Austria rely on the Unimog U 323. At the Thurnsdorf power plant the dam wall is only two and a half metres wide. A conventional crane doesn't get you very far there. Therefore the decision for a new model from Wörth was easy: the Unimog handles the local conditions well.

    Comfort in the extreme

Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks puts the Unimog implement carrier through its paces on the Grossglockner at an altitude of 2,500 m. The focus is on the UNI-TOUCH® control system.

Goes the extra mile with ease.

With the new Unimog U 527, now only one basic vehicle needs to be maintained, fuelled and stored, but it does the work of three.

    Clean competitive advantage

Only three companies in Switzerland are able to clean tunnel tubes. Besa AG is among them with its Unimog fleet.

    All good things ...

Team Orange Dresden relies on the Unimog U 527 – equipped with a V-plow, watering arm, crane and loading platform, the vehicle is versatile in use throughout the year.

A clean tomorrow without yesterday's waste

The all-electric Mercedes-Benz eEconic combines future technologies in the fields of sustainability and safety. The municipal administration of the island of Bornholm, which defines itself by its love of nature, has also opted for the locally emission-free Special Truck. As a result, the environmentally friendly waste collection vehicle is now in operation across the entire island.

    Tons of cleanliness

An Econic with a bin washing system from the company MoWa cleans waste bins with high pressure and hot water. The crews can fully rely on the comfort and ergonomics of their special truck.

    Singapore is electrified.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks delivers the first eEconic to Singapore. 800 Super Holdings thus starts emission-free, quiet and efficient waste disposal in the city.

    Great Britain's winter hero

Powerful in winter service: the 1,000th Mercedes-Benz Arocs at Econ Engineering with OM 471, PowerShift, all-wheel drive and Spargo spreader.

    All's well in Wertheim.

The municipal depot in Wertheim uses the Unimog U 327 with the UNI-TOUCH® system and winter service equipment from Bucher for municipal work.

    Energised through Innsbruck

The Innsbruck municipal services have launched a sustainable revolution in waste collection with the all-electric eEconic from Daimler Truck. The vehicle impresses with its quiet, emission-free operation, supported by on-site solar power. Its innovative technology and safety features, such as Frontguard Assist and Sideguard Assist, offer a major advantage in urban traffic. The success of the eEconic is accelerating the shift to a fully electrified vehicle fleet, supported by national funding programs.

    Eco as a system

Zellinger GmbH brings sustainable waste disposal to Upper Austria with four all-electric Mercedes-Benz eActros 300 – powered by its own green electricity.

Crane deployment instead of muscle power

To ensure a high level of safety in city traffic, Freiburg has relied on the Econic for 15 years. This also applies to the new underground containers.

    In calmness lies strength.

Environmentally friendly winter service: Autobahn GmbH is testing the eActros 400 on the A9 as the first electric snow-clearing vehicle on German motorways.
