Comfort in the extreme
The Unimog comes into its own under extreme conditions. Clearing the Grossglockner High Alpine Road of snow and ice is a particularly arduous test. That is why a team from Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks decided to put the implement carrier through its paces there. The focus of the so-called Alpine tests is UNI-TOUCH®: the control system makes operating even the heaviest attachments a breeze.
Icebreaker on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road: Unimog with UNI-TOUCH® operating system.
Challenging test run at 2,500 m.
In the rugged and inhospitable landscape of the Austrian High Alps, the engineers of Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks face a monumental task: equipped with a total of three Unimog implement carriers, they are assisting the local operating company, the Großglockner Hochalpenstraßen AG, in clearing the mountain pass – and at the same time testing their most advanced technology.
The conditions during the operation are brutal. At 2,500 m altitude the teams battle the ever-piling fresh snow – with increased avalanche danger, accompanied by miserable visibility. But the Unimog, equipped with the UNI-TOUCH® system, are not deterred by these adverse conditions.
Summit conquerors in every season.
With the Unimog implement carrier, the High Alpine Road that links the Austrian federal states of Salzburg and Carinthia meets its master. And not only for winter service. The multi‑talented vehicle from Daimler Truck is ready for action all year round.
Thanks to its robust chassis and the high ground clearance provided by portal axles, the Unimog moves effortlessly even in difficult terrain. Permanent all-wheel drive and differential locks on both axles provide optimal traction, while single tyres and the TireControl plus tyre pressure control system allow adaptation to otherwise challenging surfaces.
With a top speed of up to 89 km/h, the Unimog is also fast on the road. What really makes the implement carrier an all-rounder, however, are the more than 1,000 different attachments and body options available at its four standardized interfaces. Their control is made easy by the UNI-TOUCH® system.
“We are moving into a new generation of the Unimog with UNI-TOUCH®.”
UNI-TOUCH® sets standards.
The control system takes comfort and efficiency to the next level. The sliding centre console with a large touchscreen and individually assignable buttons enables intuitive control of the attachments.
The joystick, ergonomically adapted for the right hand, is available as an option for professional implement operation. It can be fitted to the right armrest for driver and passenger or stowed in the storage compartment in the parked position. These ergonomic improvements, together with a user-friendly menu navigation, ensure that all attachments can be operated more efficiently and therefore more economically via UNI-TOUCH® in the future. The team on the Großglockner has proven exactly that.

Easy to control, individually adjustable.
The UNI-TOUCH® central control unit makes controlling attachments very easy with clever switching elements such as linear rocker switches, adjustment dials and memory buttons. It is adjustable in length as well as longitudinally and laterally, allowing it to be adapted to a wide range of needs.
Unimog drivers can freely configure profiles, processes and controls and upload or download them via the USB data interface. Through an additional CANBUS interface they can connect extra components for controlling attachments.

In addition, third-party control units and external controls can be used with UNI-TOUCH® via an ABH interface. Practical USB ports and power outlets as well as storage compartments and cup holders round off the concept.
The test run at the Großglockner was a complete success: the so-called breakthrough, i.e. the meeting of two snow-clearing vehicles from both sides of the pass, could take place as planned at the end of April. Since May, the High Alpine Road has been open to traffic again.
