Fire service & disaster relief
Helps the helpers.
Vehicles that are deployed by the Technical Assistance Agency need certain characteristics. On the Mercedes-Benz Atego, chassis, body and equipment are cleverly coordinated with one another – forming a reliable tool for the agency's helpers. And not just in theory: 120 Atego-based equipment vehicles are already firmly planned for deployment – a further 60 are available on call.
Atego as carrier vehicle
Mercedes-Benz Atego in operation for the Technical Assistance Agency.
The Mercedes-Benz Atego 1530 AF 4×4 serves as the carrier, with a 6-cylinder diesel engine delivering 220 kW (299 hp). All-wheel drive, locks and an 800 mm fording depth — all of this helps keep the vehicle moving safely off-road. With this equipment, the permissible gross vehicle weight is 16 t with a payload of over 3.6 t. Thanks to the twin-tyred rear axle, the vehicle offers better traction and more even weight distribution. For challenging operations such as recovery, a hydraulic cable winch with 50 kN of tractive force is installed forwards. Clever deflection doubles the power of the winch to the rear to 100 kN with 25 m of cable.
Behind the driver’s cab is the largest version of the docking cab – it forms the group cab. This offers seven comfortable seats for the response team. Grab handles and three-point seat belts provide stability, and holders for helmets and radios are also available at every seat. The generous seat spacing and extras such as USB sockets ensure modern standards in the crew cab.
Body as a system.
BINZ Automotive GmbH develops the body in Plauen in close collaboration with the THW so that every detail fits the mission and the everyday work of the recovery teams. The aluminium structure provides long‑lasting protection against corrosion. At the same time, together with the profiled construction, it contributes to the vehicle’s low unladen weight. In the box body, a bespoke system keeps everything in order. Every item has its place — arranged so that responders can access it directly during operations.
The result is a coherent overall package that works robustly, shortens routes and noticeably eases the burden on the crew both en route and at the scene.
Tasks and impact in action.
The equipment vehicle is regarded as the central vehicle of the rescue teams. It is designed for many incidents such as building collapse, flooding, fire, earthquakes and major emergencies. Always on board: tools for working with wood, metal and rock. A portable generator powers equipment, and a large hydraulic device lifts and cuts heavy parts. Pumps and hoses move water. Securing and shoring equipment are also on board, as well as materials for patient transport and personal protective equipment. The rescue team can bring supplies, power and lighting to the scene and thus help to rescue people.
Through close cooperation between Daimler Truck, BINZ and the THW, an overall concept is being created that combines high transport capacity, modern crew accommodation and considerable tactical versatility: the Atego equipment vehicle.
