Agriculture, forestry & landscaping
Fit for all seasons.
In the middle of Germany – at the geographic centre of the republic – lies the western Thuringian village of Oberdorla. Nestled in idyllic countryside between Eisenach and Mühlhausen, the company "Weiss Abbruch und Erdbau" is based there. Its managing director, Simon Weiß, does not settle for mediocrity – and is therefore a great fan of his new Unimog U 530.
Versatility opens up business opportunities.
Thuringian earthworks contractor Simon Weiss makes use of the versatility of the Unimog U 530.
The company, with its six employees, has a service area of around 80 kilometres and specialises in civil engineering, site development and landscaping. Simon Weiß wants to continuously expand these areas of operation and reach places where other contractors and trucks cannot get to. For that the Unimog is the perfect vehicle: its off‑road capability, the flexibility of the superstructures, towing capacity and all‑wheel‑drive power open up further options for the company.
Everywhere. In all weathers.
Thanks to its permanent all-wheel drive, the Unimog is versatile and enables access to hard-to-reach places. Its off-road capability makes it almost independent of weather conditions or the condition of the ground. As Simon Weiß explains: "We can pick up containers on any surface. The Unimog with its tyres easily gets to places where other service providers with their trucks fail."
Someone who tidies up properly.
The high towing capacity allows Simon Weiß to use a low loader, with which he can transport machines and materials with ease — which not only further increases his operational flexibility: he can load and set down site containers almost anywhere, and also remove and tidy materials in a single operation. This saves time and keeps the construction sites tidy.
In spring and summer there is traditionally a lot to do on construction sites and in landscaping. With the Unimog the contractor expands his activities in winter — by delivering firewood. The wood is packed in special containers and transported to customers with the Unimog. They appreciate that the wood is neatly packaged and left directly at their doorstep in the evening.
A well-considered decision.
The entrepreneur experienced the decision-making and purchasing process as extremely positive: with various vehicle configurations in mind, he ultimately decided on a Unimog from the Five series – and he got exactly what he needed. In February 2023, his fully equipped Unimog was on the yard.
Particularly important to him were adequate engine power, the long wheelbase, the permanent all-wheel drive, and the innovative switchable steering for excellent driving comfort and precise handling. Furthermore, the U530 features a powerful load-sensing hydraulic system that relieves the operator and boosts performance under extreme conditions.
Attachment options for the future.
An important buying argument for the Thuringian was also the numerous mounting options for implements and their outstanding operating comfort. No matter what you mount, the overview is unparalleled: "You won't find such a good view of front-mounted implements of any kind anywhere else," raves Simon Weiß about his Unimog.
Such front-mounted fittings include, for example, mowing equipment, which the contractor is already planning to acquire for the future: whether a mower for upcoming municipal landscape-maintenance tenders that he can retrofit later—or a disc-wheel shredder for hobby farming.
Bring the power to the road.
Last but not least, the Unimog is strong and fast. Compared with conventional trucks, the U 530 with its 300 hp is second to none: it brings the power to the road — but also to the fields and construction‑site ground, because it transfers its power in a unique way. Moreover, the operator can cover the often long distances between work sites in no time, since the Unimog travels on motorways at 89 km/h, even when towing a fully loaded trailer.
“Everything is perfectly coordinated and can be fine-tuned down to the smallest detail.”
A fan since childhood.
The many sensible arguments for acquiring a Unimog found fertile ground with Weiß, because his fascination with the Unimog began at a young age: visits to an acquaintance who owned two Unimog U 406s with winches for timber work left a lasting impression back then. “The seating position, the clear view ahead, the things you can fit on it — that was already fascinating, even with the older series,” Weiß recounts with pleasure.
This enthusiasm shaped him and led him to join the Unimog Club, visit the Unimog Museum and thoroughly consider the ideal equipment for his company even before buying the U530. For in the years without a Unimog he repeatedly found himself in situations where he thought, “Again — I could really use a Unimog here.”
Bring enthusiasm to the center.
The entrepreneur is convinced that the Unimog also offers great added value to other companies, municipalities and private individuals in his region. The popularity of the Unimog is currently even greater in southern Germany than in the middle of the country. But he sees that things are changing: not only because his Unimog is a real eye-catcher and sparks conversations, but also because a younger, tech-enthusiastic generation is moving into decision-making positions, bringing the necessary know-how.
He regularly exchanges ideas with these technology enthusiasts at trade fairs and exhibitions — as he does every year at the Demopark trade fair held in June in Eisenach, which is only a half-hour's drive from his home. "I really enjoy being there and always stay a little longer, because I love talking about the technology and potential applications of the Unimog."
